Computer and Internet Use Agreement

The Elmhurst Public Library offers access to computers and the Internet in order to expand the Library's collection of informational, educational, and recreational materials and to provide a means of processing information for a variety of purposes.

Elmhurst Public Library is not responsible for damages, indirect or direct, arising from a library patron's use of computers or the Internet at the Library.

Internet access is filtered in accordance with the Children's Internet Protection Act. Users should be aware that filters are not 100% effective. The Library has no control over the content of the Internet and is not responsible for what users view on the Internet. Parents or legal guardians must accept full responsibility for teaching their child appropriate Internet behavior and for supervising the child's use of the Internet so that inappropriate matter is not accessed. Parents should not allow their children to use their library cards for Internet access since a lower level of filtering is applied to adult cards. Minors should exercise caution in e-mail and other direct communications and avoid disclosing personal information.

Library patrons should be aware that under Federal and State statutes, law enforcement officials may access records of computer and Internet use.

Patron Assistance and Instruction
Library staff may provide assistance to patrons in the use of computers and the Internet as time and staff knowledge permits. Printed and online documentation and instructions are available at or near points of service. Formal instruction is available at scheduled times.

Use of Equipment and Networks
Elmhurst Public Library requires that library patrons using computers and the Internet do so within the guidelines of acceptable use. The following activities are unacceptable:

  • use of the Internet for any purpose which results in the harassment of other users
  • destruction of, damage to or unauthorized alteration of the library's computer equipment, software, or network security procedures
  • installation of chat or other programs
  • use of the Internet in any way which violates a Federal or State law
  • use of electronic information networks accessed via the Internet in any way which violates licensing and payment agreements between Elmhurst Public Library and network/database providers
  • unauthorized duplication of copyright protected software or violation of software license agreements
  • violation of system security
  • behavior that is disruptive to other users.
User Agreement
I have read the above policy and agree to abide by its provisions. I shall not allow another person to use my name and library card number or PIN to use computers at the Elmhurst Public Library. I understand that violation of this agreement shall result in loss of my computer use privileges.
