CSI at the Library

Thursday, January 31 • 7 p.m. • Meeting Room 2
Witness two officers from the Elmhurst Police Department show how they investigate a crime scene using physical evidence, from fingerprints and blood samples to gunpowder residue. See for yourself how forensic clues can aid in solving a crime. Audience members will have the opportunity to use the analytical equipment. No hands up, just hands on.

The Outfit Collective, a group of noted Chicago crime fiction authors, will talk about the nature of crime fiction, how and why they write, and how their writing is influenced by living in Chicago. This is your chance to get inside the mind of a crime writer. Meet Sean Chercover, Barbara D’Amato, Michael Allen Dymmoch, Kevin Guilefoile, and Libby Hellmann, editor of the recently released anthology, Chicago Blues.

Jack the Ripper: The Whitechapel Murderer

Jack the Ripper is a name that brings to mind vivid images of murder, mayhem, and 19th century East London. This series of murders of hapless young women has never been solved, and the identity of "Jack" remains a mystery. Linda Putnam presents an intriguing program that will discuss the nature of London’s East End, reveal the character of each victim, and present several theories of "who-dunit."

Doug Cummings: Writing Crime from Fact to Fiction

Wednesday, February 27 • 7 p.m. • Meeting Room 2
Find out just how closely art can imitate life when suburban Chicago author Doug Cummings discusses his "Reno McCarthy" mystery series and discloses how a 25-year career in broadcast journalism influenced the creation of a fictional alter ego. In more than seventeen years as a crime and breaking news reporter for the former WMAQ Radio and then WGN Radio, Doug received awards for his coverage of dozens of stories including murders, train crashes, fires, school shootings, and tornadoes. Will the real Reno McCarthy please stand up?
