The Smithsonian Institution presents:
Masks of Lincoln
Exhibiting February 1–March 29 • 2nd Floor, near staircase
Drawn from the National Portrait Gallery’s unrivaled collection of Lincoln portraits, this exhibit charts Lincoln’s passage from a fresh-faced Illinois congressman to a troubled visage as he led the fight for the Union, culminating in his isolation as president. These portraits invite the viewer to examine closely the complex and mysterious man who came from nothing and was nationally unknown until the moment of his nomination for the presidency. |

American Numismatic Association presents:
Currency In Conflict: Money of the Civil War
Exhibiting April 12–June 3 • 2nd floor, near Info Desk
A wide variety of coins were in circulation before the war, but during the conflict, precious metal coins were hoarded as money changed to meet the new demands of the divided nation. This exhibit explores the “emergency money” such as demand notes, greenbacks, encased postage stamps, and Civil War tokens, plus the first U.S. coin to feature the motto “In God We Trust.” |
